Also, they are fairly inferior to anything you can get for death knights or any other class, with the addition of WotLK, weapons and armor have moved to levels far beyond the Azzinoth blades

Its not rocket science, just look at the weapon type... DKs can't use fist weapons.

If you were to use the manner in which the weapon is gripped as the determining factor in the weapon type, wouldn't that make polearms and staves the same weapon type?

At any rate, look at the way you swing the weapon (and try to imagine yourself swinging it) - I, for one, cannot see any reasonable way to use those Warglaives, in a manner that would seem fist-weapon-like, without simply punching with the handguard.
The only logical way I could see them being used is in a slashing/sweeping motion (whichever you prefer), which would seem more natural with a sword than a fist weapon IMO
