WOW's Blizzard background Downloader

i am trying to install the new wow Patch (4.0.0), and for some reason it is telling me that i probably have a firewall enabled. however, i just uninstalled my anti-virus to get this to move along, and am almost certain that windows defender is not operating. what could be the problem? should/can i remove Windows defender? the download will actually continue at a snails pace, raising from an eta of 12 hr to over 72 hr. but my internet connection should be way faster than that, as it doesnt have problems downloading other things. how can i fix this?

*(edit) BTW, am running Window vista, in case that is relevant.

You could try downloading the patch(es) from a patch mirror listed here. A number of my guildmates say they did this instead of using the Background Downloader because the downloader was being slow for them.
