Tried it once, waited for maybe 40 minutes and nothing happened, had to force quit WE.

Yes, depending on your map (doodads mostly), size and general comp power, it can take between a couple seconds and several hours.

Still, do it.
Always.

Took my computer a few seconds to do with epic map with 16k doodads.

(4,5 GHZ Intel)
