Denmark beat Croatia in the final of the European men's handball championship to win its first gold medal in an international final
After what started out on a depressing note with a 26-27 loss to host nation Norway ten days prior, Denmark capped a seven-game undefeated streak in the EURO 2008 handball championships on Sunday, beating Croatia 24-20 and securing its first gold medal in a men's international tournament.
Denmark was facing off against Croatia for the second time in the tournament. In the first competition, Denmark flexed its muscle by cruising to a 30-20 win over a team expected to be one of the competition's strongest teams.
But from the opening whistle of Sunday's rematch it appeared that the Croatians, led by playmaker Ivano Balic, repeatedly named as the best player in the world, were ready to live up to that billing.
The Croats opened with a swarming offence and after seven minutes had jumped to a 4-0 lead, holding Denmark scoreless until the eighth minute.
