quick question about gimp

how do I make something transparent? I have a selection that I want to make transparent, but nothing is doing it.

Go to Dialogs>Layers and lower the layer Opacity.

no no no, I meant that, how can I make a selection, not a layer, clear?

In the layers dialog right click on the selection and make it a new layer. Then lower Opacity.

Edit- Clear I believe.

If that doesn't work then right click the layer then click add alpha channel and then try it again.

oh, okay. I tried edit- clear a few times but it didnt work until I did the alpha channel. thanks.
