World Soup kitchen opens for dogs

BERLIN (Reuters) – A soup kitchen exclusively for dogs has opened its doors in Berlin providing pets of the homeless and unemployed with a free meal, the director of the establishment said on Friday.

Despite the looming financial crisis, director Claudia Hollm dismissed criticism that it may be more sensible to collect money for humans than for dogs.

"Nowadays people underestimate dogs. They are incredibly important for those who lack social contact with other humans," Hollm told Reuters.

"Making sure dogs don't go hungry is just as important as making sure that people don't starve," she added.

I hope that means they're also taking them in, not just feeding any dogs that come in.

I thought we already had dog spay/neuter programs to try and reduce overpopulation, how is this going to help?

Exactly how it says in the article. It helps keep the dogs or other pets owned by the homeless or poor alive. And as it also said in the article, pets and dogs are an important part of keeping the poor and homeless mentally healthy providing some level of social contact.

Along with this the poor and homeless wont have to give their own food to their pets which will keep them physically healthier as well as mentally.

I think that is a good idea, how sweet!! Seeing a homeless person with their dog makes me happy and sad: happy they have a great companion and sad that the dog is homeless as well.
