Errors such as these can be related to several things..

Uninstall Diablo II
First you'll need to uninstall Diablo II from the Diablo II uninstaller, located in your Diablo II program group on the Windows Start button.

Run Scandisk and Defrag
Now, run a thorough Scandisk and a Defrag of your hard drive(s). To do this, click on "Start", then "run", then type "scandisk" in the box and click on OK. Follow the prompts and select "Thorough" scandisk and let it run. This will tell you if there are any problems on the hard disk. Then click on "Start" then "run", and type "defrag". Follow the prompts to defrag your hard drive. This will make the available space more usable by your programs. You will probably find it helpful to disable your screen saver and Power Management features before you scandisk or defrag. Sometimes windows will restart the defragmentation and/or scandisk if your screen saver or power management kicks in.

Reinstall Diablo II
Now reinstall Diablo II, then download and install the latest Diablo2 patch from (http://www.blizzard.com/support/information/d2patch.shtml)

Update your Video Drivers
If you still get any errors, you should try updating your video and sound card drivers. This is the most common fix for most errors. Even if you are sure that your drivers are up to date, you should double check by visiting the manufacturer's website. If you have any video card that offers 3d accelleration, you can also check (http://www.3dchipset.com) for the most current drivers. If you find that you do indeed have the most current sound and video card drivers, reinstall them. It is free, and it might solve your problem.

Here is some useful information for finding out what kind of sound card and/or video card you have, and how to update the driver(s).

Right Click on "My Computer" and select "Properties".
From the System Properties window, click on the "Device Manager" tab.
Click on the "+" next to "Display adapters". Write down what appears below. This is your video card.
Now click on the "+" next to "sound, video, and game controllers". You will probably see several things listed there, usually one of the first things listed is your sound card. The other things listed will be sound, video, or joystick utilities. We would recommend writing down what you find here, then doing an internet search, such as Yahoo! or Alta Vista, for specifically what you found (such as SB16 PnP, or ESS 1868, or Ensoniq AudioDrive, etc...). You should find several places to download the driver for your sound card. Your best bet is the card manufacturer's website. Whatever driver the card manufacturer has posted for your card should be the most current.
We would recommend creating a folder for the driver, and downloading to it. Download the driver and note the file name. Use the same process to obtain the video card driver, using the information you found under "Display adapters".

Instructions for installation of the drivers should be available at the websites also, but not always. In some cases, the driver is going to be an .exe file that installs itself when you double click on it. Or it could be a .zip file, in which case you will want to create a folder for it and unzip it in the folder. Look for a Readme.txt file to appear when you unzip the file. This readme file should give you the actual installation instructions.

Check if your system is overheating or overclocked
If your system is overclocked it may be producing too much heat which will adversely affect program performance. If the system is producing high amounts of heat but is not overclocked, we would suggest you add a fan to your system to help ventilate and cool the case.

Remove "New.net Application" from Add/Remove programs

Open control panel by going to Start, Settings, then Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs, and select the New.net Application. ( Some systems may not have this application installed ) Select Remove.

Attach any d2.txt files you find in your Diablo II folder. The date should be the same as the date you received the C0000005 error. Please provide as much detail as possible about exactly what you were doing when the error happened so we can try to reproduce it.

Your operating system and version. (Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows NT SP5, etc...)
Your processor type and speed. (specify whether it is overclocked/underclocked)
How much RAM your system has.
Video and sound card model and manufacturer and driver versions.
Attach any d2debug.txt & d2.txt files you find in your Diablo II folder.
Attach the msinfo file.
