Diablo 2 LOD TCP/IP Game

I need help setting up a local TCP/IP game.

I get messages like...

"Unable to host game" and "unable to join game"

I removed my router and hooked two computers directly with a cross over cable. Turned off my firewalls. File and printer sharing was working fine in both directions. But the same errors still popped up. "Unable to host game" and "unable to join game"

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Eddie

Make sure your 2 computers are properly configured so they know they are on the same network.

Same Network !!!

With the Router both computers were on the 192.168.1.0 /24 network. When I hooked them up with the crossover cable they are on the 169.254.0.0 /8

I can access both computers. Pings ok, TraceRT ok (not a very long tracert hehehe) File Sharing ok, Can access the printer, which is attached to the other computer.

Same error message...

"Unable to host game" and "unable to join game"

Got me!

Make sure you're on the same version of Diablo II.

And BTW, give me the specs on both of the computers. Which one that can't create game and which one that can.

Game version is Diablo II with the Expansion Pack Installed.
Also Patch version1.09 has been applied
This is true for both computers.

I have tried both systems as host/client. It just switches the error message around. I'm assuming that it can join because the server can not host the game. I believe the problem is in setting up the system to host them game. Neither system can Host a Game.

Both computers are Win2K Pro
System one has an 800mhz PIII with 256mb RAM
System two has a 300mhz PII with 192mb RAM

Thanks for any help / ideas that you come up with

if one of the computers also has an internet connection, try disabling that temporarily

The game sometimes get confused as to which adapter to listen on -- not sure if that is the problem here

Both Computers only have one NIC each. When they are hooked up with the crossover cable (to by pass the Linksys router) there is no internet connection.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions!

The winning suggestion was...
Boot up only one computer. Load up the game and have that computer host the game. All went well. Boot up second computer, load game and join game. We are now play a local TCP/IP Diablo2 LOD game.

Thanks
