What affects my human height?

I remember a thread which told us not to ask questions regarding our "health". If this thread falls under that, please close this.
_____________

I've searched on Wiki, but my English is rather crappy and I couldn't find an equivalent article in Swedish.

So this is my question: What affects my height?
I know genes do, but what about environmental factors?
What are the environmental factors? Milk? Sports?
My dad also told me that if you're an Asian, and grew up in Europe, your lenght would most likely be higher than if you grew up in Asia. Is this true?
Also, would a bad posture also affect my height?

I'm aware of that there aren't any professionals here that could answer my questions (I guess), but I assume that some of you may have learnt this in school/class?

I thinked I asked my teacher once. I think he said that there aren't any environmental factors. That your lenght is already determined within your DNA or something.

If you lifted weights as a child, you'd probably be shorter.
Focusing on height rather than muscle when growing up as a teen can help your height.
Like the average soccer player is short(er) than say basketball, since soccer focuses on leg strength.

You are, in fact, wrong.

No harm in training while young. Don't. Spread. Myths.

Edit:

>I think drinking milk is more common/normal/regular in Europe then Asia

Cow's milk is for cows, not humans. It might do harm to children, and doesn't necessarily need to affect the height.

the asian thing probably isnt consistent. Both my brother and I were born in America but my brother is taller then my mom but shorter then my dad. I am taller then both of them.

I also think that swimming will increase your height, just because of the type of exercise it gives.

Thanks for the link about Cow's Milk, I've never had it because I'm extremely allergic to it, but I've always known there is stuff wrong with it, good explanation in that article.

So it just happens that the people I've known who have weight lifted since kids are all short?
If you're at your main growth stage and you lift heavy weights, you're being compressed.
Relatives of mine who are doctors/nurses all say lifting at a young age (especially developmental age) can stunt growth.
And I mean lifting as in body builder. Injuries. Or something. Obviously exercise is needed, but over-lifting to get a buffed body at a young age is not just exercise.
Yeesh no need to be so harsh.
Don't forget to tell your kid to start lifting 150 lbs. at age 10.

And also, yeah, your DNA.

I couldn't think how height is affected by muscle training...Nor do I think that your growing spurt will stop after rigorious exercises.

I only know that growing spurts depends on individuals.

Working out puts energy in muscle growth, which in turn has to be subtracted from height gain. And I'm talking about intense bodybuilding here in pre-teen years. From 15/16 onwards, you can work out pretty much whatever you want.

I find this a little ridiculous because I've actually seen a dairy farm and it's hardly a contaminated place. Also, I've drunk milk pretty every every day of my life, twice a day, and I'm a 183 cm tall, perfectly healthy human being. I should say that both my parents are also very tall, so it's probably not milk only.

However, milk does provide essential calcium for bone growth, which is essential for height.

it probably isnt a good idea to think too much about the milk thing, unless you want to get disturbed or something

Yes, your height depends very much on your genes. Also the environment you live in affects your grow. Oxygen also. Remember wasps and other insects millions of years ago? They were huge, because there were more oxygen in the air then.

The biggest factor in height is probably hormones actually. Most genetically short people take hormones of their gender to get to a normal height, and etc...

There is this thing called Growth Hormone(GH) There can be a condition where you are deprived of it(dwarfism) or have too much of it(gigantism or enlargement of Hands head etc..). The downside is people who are extraordinarily tall have problems with the internal organs while people with dwarfism suffer from err..... Humiliation and stuff. The production of GH with from the pituitary glands is based on dna and also some external factors. With the advancement in technology steroids are available...I think sooo...and the ability to elongate bones or shorten them. The most impt thing is be happy with who you are..You might envy others but they may even be more envious of you in other way

If you are out of shape and unfit while in the critical part of growth, then you won't be as tall as you can be.
My doctor told me if I exercised I'd have another year to grow, if I didn't then I'd just get an inch and stop.

Yes, I've always wanted to be either a giant or a dwarf.
