The police have destroyed at least 84 of their retired dogs in the past three years, despite families being keen to adopt them, it has emerged. Some of the dogs that have been put down were just four months old.

There are also claims that dogs across various forces have been put down despite long waiting lists of people wanting to adopt them. The news, revealed in The Sun, follows the revelation this week that the Ministry of Defence has destroyed 288 dogs in the past 10 years, including two RAF dogs that guarded Prince William. Brus and Blade were destroyed just days after he quit the service.
