IceFrog really opened a can of worms by moving almost everything into JASS.

I've been going through my favorite maps seeing what works and what doesn't. If a map loads and a game starts succesfully with 1.24, can it be assumed that the map is not broken, or is it possible that a problem won't manifest until that code is actually called in the duration of the game?

I'm guessing it's perfectly safe for you to play. There's no troubles going on with Patch 1.24, else Blizzard is going to release a new patch soon...

Nope, if it loads there's still a chance that problems occur.
Played the new aotz version (which worked fine on westfall) and it crashed WC after a while.

Since the mapping community and blizzard pretty much failed to inform the players on what this patch means...

Uhh.. My screen showed a cute little button that showed me all the information of patches in the past. I didn't save 1.24 but here's the one from 1.23. Sorry it's a stupid word file, I'm sure they have something on the B.net site with this too.
