From a Christian perspective, someone doesn't go to hell because they haven't gone to church. Likewise, living the good life and doing good to others is a fantastic endeavor, but it also does not determine whether someone goes to hell or not.

If you are referring to other beliefs though, things could be different.

Church had a lot of power back in 1600-1800. If you didn't go to church on Sundays, you got punished. Same thing nowadays - except that you go to Hell.
