Buying External Hardrive

Hey im just about out of memory on my computer and rather than try and delete some of my stuff I just want to buy an external hardrive for my laptop. 2 quick questions.

1st: Is the best option for a laptop just buying an external hardrive.
2nd: I was looking on best buy and new egg and found a 320 gb external hardrive for 109.99. That seemed pretty good to me but is their a better deal?

I dont know what a firewire connection is so i doubt it. Im not very computer inclined (sorry) but all the hardrives i have seen work with a USB cord.

nope sorry it was my dad's old work laptop. Its an IBM Thinkpad i think its from 2001 or 2002. sorry for my lack of information

any external usb drive will do the job .

firewire gives u slight speed increase but was really usefull back in the old days when it consumed less cpu cycles .. with dual and quad cores nowdays that is hardly an issue /
