Don't be so sarcastic! In my case the problem did NOT appear after the last windows update which went through perfectly well. I'd been doing a lot of work uninstalling programs, deleting files, defragging etc and don't know what precipitated this crash, but it wasn't the last update on its own. I didn't want to lose the work I'd been doing so tried several restore points before the fix finally worked.
