How does the formula between

Combat - Attack 1 - Damage Base
Combat - Attack 1 - Number of Dice
Combat - Attack 1 - Sides per Die

Work?

EDIT: Exact names added

I'm pretty sure it's sides per dice and number per die.
Though i can't answer your question.

I'm pretty sure it's:

Damage Base + (Number of Dice * (Random number from 1 to Sides per Die))

Think of it as Damage base + extra damage, with the extra damage being a certain number of dice being rolled (therefore its random) and each die has a certain number of sides.

damage base = the damage add up on top of your dice
example always show good information
eg
Combat - Attack 1 - Damage Base = 10
Combat - Attack 1 - Number of Dice = 3
Combat - Attack 1 - Sides per Dice = 8
as you can see you use 3 DICE, and each dice has 8 SIDE, so if you those 3 DICE and with 8 SIDE each dice, the sum of those number is between 3 to 24

why 3? 3 dice with number 1 show up, why 24? 3 dice with number 8 show up

then those number 3 to 24 will add up to your damage base, in above case, is 10
so your unit will have a damage range of 13-34

but behave that if you set damage base 10 but you never set number of dice and side of dice, your unit will have no damage range(attack command is then disable)

so if you want to have your unit as 1 damage as show in the tooptip, simple put damage base 0, number of dice 1 and side of dice 1.

why it happen to be that? ask blizzard

it is rather much more simple

Picture it as Jamb Dice

there are X dice, and each has Y sides
thus minimum would be to roll 1 on each side
which is basically 1 x number of dice = x

so minimum is X (increased by BASE damage ofcourse)

maximum is to roll a maximum number on each die
so it is number of dice x max number on a dice (which is basically equal to number of sides per die)

base = 10
dices = 3
sides = 6 (to make it a standard dice)

minimum roll is 3 (all 3 dices go to 1)
maximum roll is 18 (all 3 dices go to 6)

add the base and you are set

base + number = min dmg
base + (numebr * side) = max dmg

and remember that it really works like dices; for example two 6-sided dices will have a greater chance of scoring 7. that is why there is a difference between having for example base damage 10 and one 10-sided dice than having the base damage 9 and two 5-sided dices.
