Scientists believe they may have answered the question

Just like in The Matrix, we may too be living in a simulation generated by an all powerful computer, according to research f you believe The Matrix franchise, what we think is our everyday life is in fact a simulation generated by an all-powerful computer. However this idea may not simply be science fiction and 'cosmic rays' could reveal that we are indeed living in a simulated universe.

According to Discover magazine, physicists can offer us the ability to test whether we live in our own virtual Matrix, by studying radiation from space.Cosmic rays are the fastest particles that exist and originate in far-flung galaxies. They always arrive at Earth with a specific maximum energy of 1020 electron volts.

If there is a specific maximum energy for particles then this gives rise to the idea that energy levels are defined, specific and constrained by an outside force.

We figured out we live in a Matrix, so we built our own Matrix to see if the Matrix in the Matrix can make their own Matrix.

These scientists are idiots. One of the basic facts about simulated universes, given no direct input from the "real" world, is that it's impossible to prove that you're within a simulated universe, because if you are within a simulated universe the laws of physics would also be simulated and not necessarily equal to those of what would be the "real" world. Any and all discoveries made within the simulated universe are also dependent on its laws, and we cannot speculate on the reality outside of our own because we have no way to observe it.

If I was the programmer of the universe we live in, it would have been trivial for me to change how cosmic rays worked. I'm not sure how their experiment is set up, but by definition they have to have a case where their experiment proves false. If our universe was simulated, cosmic rays could easily have been made to provide that value instead and their experiment would prove to be false. Their experiment can come up both True and False in the simulated universe, depending on how it was first structured, and therefore the experiment is not indicative of reality.

Of course, this is exactly why the more rational belief is that we don't live in a simulated universe, because if we can't find evidence for it, we have no way to distinguish whether we live in a simulated or in a non-simulated universe. Therefore the simpler explanation (applying Occam's Razor) is the one preferred.
