Forcefully removing the effect of an ability from a unit?

I have a 65536 second faerie fire cast on a unit when he picks up an item. However, I want the faerie fire to go away when the unit drops the item. Removing the buff from the unit doesn't seem to work. Is the only way to purge the unit?

Purge should work

You could also make the unit invulnerable, then make them vulnerable again? I think that removes buffs (could also remove positive buffs though, so you might wanna test that) even though you could have unwanted side-effects of potential abuse (get hit by a negative spell, drop the item, no more negative buffs ^^)

I was playing around with GUI - vJass and encountered that
JASS:
removed my buff in the spell I was creating. You can try that ^_^
Crtl + D for Buff ID in Object Editor

Sadly, it's not working for me. My unit is "udg_Map_VisionWesties" and my BuffID is 'B00U'. I would end up with:
JASS:
call UnitRemoveAbility(udg_Map_VisionWesties, 'B00U')
but the buff stays there.
