Help with web server setup!

Hello everyone! I just got interested on web-based server and I need help. I just want to know what program or application is the best in setting up a web-based server. I have XAMPP at home but it has lots of programs so it's kinda complicated for me (but i've tried it). I want something like, one program for web server; one program for the database. (separate programs for each). I'm using PHP btw. ..And how do I hook them up together?

It's complicated to compile them seperately.. Just stick with the packages.. I recommend Appserv or WAMP
