So I want to transfer a 12 gig folder from my other computer to this one. Any suggestions that are free and that don't include portable hard drives because mines broken.

  1. Open both cases and move the HDD from one PC to another (assuming they're compatible) and then just copy the file.
  2. Connect the two computers with an UTP cable and then move the folder using a LAN connection.
  3. Pack and split the folder using WinRAR for example and then use a DVD-RW to copy the parts from one PC to another (assuming your "source" PC has a DVD burner device).

Yeah, there are programs that will make a file into many smaller blocks, you may want to try that.
Sending over LAN if you have a router and both comps connected to that, is fast.

It's not "fast", but it's the fastest method possible, mind you. ;)
I transfered a 6 gig file in about 30 seconds over mine. =/

Make sure they're in the same workgroup, then goto network places and find the other computer. Click 'n' drag pretty much from there.

Assuming the network is setup correctly and that the folder (or it's parent folder) is shared (right click -> properties -> sharing tab -> Share this folder on the network is checked), all you need to do is open My Computer on the "destination" PC and type in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the local IP address of the "source" PC.
If you don't know the IP address, follow these steps (on the "source" PC):
  1. Start->Run, type cmd and press Enter.
  2. Type ipconfig and press Enter again.
  3. Output will look something like this:
    Code:
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

            Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
            IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : [B]192.168.0.100[/B]
            Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
            Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
The bold part is your IP address.

> if you have a router
Direct connection is good too.

Goto my network places, oh and make a folder with sharing enabled on the computer that you're sending the files to.
