I've seen textmacros used before to create abilities via the object editor. I'm not sure how to do it thought, and my question is twofold. One how to do it, and two can this be done at any time other than map initialization? If I could create or alter a spell's duration mid trigger that would be amazing.

What you are describing is not a textmacro but a call to an external program within the map script. JassHelper has the //! external syntax included to allow you to run these programs while the map is being saved. That particular program is called ObjectMerger and is included with Newgen (there are some other programs as well, can be found in your newgen\grimext folder, with the readme).

Basically, ObjectMerger merges all the information you give it with the object editor data files meaning you can create abilities, units and such within the script. It only happens once though, when the map is being compiled. You cannot change this data dynamically while the game is being played.
