Preventing Killing Blows

I've been toying around with the idea of giving one of my heroes a passive ability which negates all damage taken in an instance 2/4/6/8/10 percent of the time.

Now it's easy to simulate this by simply healing the hero for the damage taken if this procs ofcourse (proc chance depending on the level of the ability he has), but what if the damage kills him? The whole point of it is to mitigate damage, but it fails miserably if say, he has 150 health, eats a 500 damage nuke, and dies, even though my debugging trigger puts out a message "Damage soak procced!" and I know the damage should've been mitigated. :mad:

I'd also like to include another passive ability (given to another hero, ofcourse) with the same theme, but a different twist; always mitigating 4/8/12/16/20 percent of the damage taken. This fails as well, since it can happen that the hero dies due to taking more damage than he should.

Anyway, is there any workaround to this problem?
