1. Introduction
A soldier during another battle in the Warcraft 3 dimension aproached his commander and spoke out in a rage:
-Soldier: Commander! We cant defend against these orcs if we dont make better walls than these! The walls go so low they can practically jump over them!
-Commander: Quiet yourself and get back in line. If you happen to have a better idea, then show it and i'll listen.
-Soldier: You bet i know a better idea than these groundleveled walls! From now on, you shall know me as:
Smygarn777 the Engineer.

2. Realistic Walls
Are you tired of these flatlined walls that dont even appear to be properly sized, or the fact that you cant position units on them (plus that they go so low that they only look like jumping fences)? Are you tired of the Cliff walls that not only look ugly but also offer poor ramp detail (you who edit alot should be aware of those diagonal ramps that get all screwed over).
Are you also tired of the fact that no matter if you even throw a nuke on the wall, it wont even get a scratch?
Then you have come to the right place. This simple dude, another "Soldier" of the Warcraft community will show you how to create much better walls.

3. How to make the walls
Before we start, im gonna briefly go through what tools i will be using.
a) Shift+Placement
b) Ctrl+PageUp & Ctrl+PageDown
As simple as that. I'll refer to these as A and B later on, so keep that in mind.

4. Getting Started
Alright, now we're getting to the point of this Tutorial. Hold your breath and gaze in awe!
amazed_h7ek.jpg

As this amazing...commoner shows his work.

5. Guide
Okay, we'll start off by placing some walls. In this example, i will be using the Destructible Walls.
1.JPG

You might see that i placed them equally far from each other, leaving 3 spaces between each wall. Why did i do this you might ask. That brings us to the second part. We will place another wall there, but as you might see on the picture below:
2.JPG

Oh my, it wont fit. Now what do we do? Its easy. To place the wall regardless if it fits there or not, you simply hold down Shift (A) while placing it (you cannot use this if your dragging something, you have to place it). The result is this:
3.JPG

Well, that looks alot better than placing the walls right next to each other doesnt it? Anyway, lets continue. I will add a few more walls to go on with this tutorial.
4.JPG

Then next, we'll place even more walls, like in the picture below (A):
5.JPG

This doesnt look all to nice right now, but that will quickly change. Now, you select every other wall and then raise them using (B), so it will look like this:
6.JPG

Phew. Now thats done, if you have followed me without any troubles this far, then it wont be hard to understand the next part. Using (B) might allow you to place walls ontop of each other to a degree, but you cant stack them on the same space without customizing them to not be taking any space upon placement (which if you ask me makes it alot harder on precision placement).

So. We have the height we desire for the wall, but that thin wall doesnt look to durable. I will repeat the earlier steps and place Elevators and another set of walls behind the first line, then raise them to a fitting height so that it will look like this:
8.JPG

And this is it. You might run into some problems with the corner walling as you experiment, so i'll show how i solved that. I added some lights from "City" tileset to cover the corner, so it looks like this in my example:
9.JPG

6. Summary
And that concludes my Tutorial. There isnt much more i can instruct you on, so i'll finish this tutorial by showing a scenery i worked on. I named it, Rockfort. =)

-Peasant: These walls are much better than the ones we had to defend earlier. We can even walk on these! This will be much more tactical.
- Get ready you filthy orcs. You cant dance yourselves over this one!
-Peasant2: But how did we get up here? The tutor didnt instruct anyone on how to make ramps did he?
-Peasant: Ramps were added later on he said. He dropped us ontop of the wall using the Godlike hand.

maybe you want to have a look at this map i made some day out of boredom.
it still has some flaws, dont expect something perfect.

P.S.: if you wonder about the "Ramp" trigger it really didnt worked for me when using an iteration.

Dont be so quick to judge the tutorial in a negative way like that. Im showing you how to make the walls. But just because i didnt bother with extra enviroment details for showoff is certainly cruel of you to say its not that nice.

Unlike some walls you have already seen, these offer 2 advantages:
1. Units can walk on them.
2. Since its made from destructible walls, you can destroy segments and thus punch a hole through the wall itself.

If you wanna say its not that nicelooking though, then feel free to stick to those cliffs and ramps the terrain editor offers.

*EDIT*
Accname, what do you exactly want me to look at? Is there something you want me to fix, or are you merely asking for my opinion?

*EDIT2*
Ah, you build squarish tiles of walls. A good system indeed, but has its flaws like you said.

have you tried it? its exactly what you did but ingame.
i didnt ever finish that system because i didnt wanted to make it in the first place, i just started working on it out of boredom.
now i think i should still somehow release it to public but i havent gotten enough time to finish it myself, maybe you want to have a look at it, work on it, finish it, release it here and claim the reputation for yourself.(i dont care)
i just believe this is something people would like to see.

Sorry to say it, but im no coder or programmer. Im more of a specialist in enviroment and terrain. my programming skills are close to deadzero.

Well, perhaps you should show us a picture with some work put into it and show how it can look good instead of breaking down and crying. (Excuse the extremities. It just sounds cool <3)

i assume you were talking to me.

well, i dont need to show any pictures, i didnt made that map to show off or to earn my shiny beautiful reputation points, it was merely a little fun for me.
now i saw this turtorial of somebody doing mostly what i did and thought i might just pass him my work and have him have fun, yeah i really thought he would have fun with it.
i believe somebody might want to use this somehow but i havent gotten any time to work it up, either i drop it in the bin or hand it over to somebody else, neither way i lose or have to work.

I think he's referring to me. That i replied to their negative comments that they dont think it looks that good.

000==============000
You didnt even say why it looked so bad, and im not crying about it. When i first wrote the topic, i wanted Constructive Replies. "i dont like it", is exactly what i said i dont want to see, its my first attempt at a tutorial even, so i know its not that wellmade. As for the scenery images, its all there at the bottom. Look through the thread before you make such claims. >.>

I believe that those bottom pics are what he's referring to. He means they don't look good. And I agree. They don't...

You say your specialty is terraining. Well.... apply those skills and make us something to show how this CAN look good.

well then i have to apologize.

back on topic:
1). i think there is too much off-topic in your turtorial, it would be cut down to 5 lines if you throw everything which does not belong in this thread.
2). i am curious how you will make it work without triggers that these walls can be destroyed in battle. even if the elevator platforms and the surounding walls are destroyed you have to keep in mind that units might then jump up and down from the wall to the gap and vice versa without a pathing blocker.
3). scale the elevators smaller because they stick out of the walls right now

by the way, back to off-topic again, Sevion how can you post a replay without being logged in? at least you are not marked as logged in for me when i hover my mous over the little blue/green dot next to your usename...

This could be useful. :)
Could you please put the peasant picture in spoiler tags, I kept having to scroll around to read stuff.

They said that the wall didn't look nice, you have to handle criticism better.

btw does anyone actually use blizzard cliffs unless it's intentional?

At the moment, the wall looks very bad compared to 2-P's way. But, let me say this: this method has much potential! Playing around with scales etc can make it much better.

Accname, it's magic.

Indeed it can. I'd like to keep in mind that i showed how to do this without customizing any objects. I overreacted yesterday, sorry bout that.

But one thing i quickly noticed as i threw ideas around on the tutorial, is that you can build structures on the Courtyard. =)

Rockfort4.JPG

Look here. This is one thing i didnt know i could do with this idea.
Rockfort3.JPG

Although i had to start customizing at this point, by making the building only require "Ground-pathable".
This also means that you can make towers on the outer wall as well, not just the small bit of patch inside the gate.

*EDIT*
Another picture showing towers on walls etc...
Rockfort5.JPG

While these walls may not be the most impressive in quality look (just screenie here), they do have alot of potential if you can have units on them, build on them and ofc destroy segments of the wall.
But for destroying the wall, you will need to customize and trigger im afraid.

you dont need to modify the structures by modifying the destructables.

How did you elevate the walls?

i have tried placing the elevator but it remains on same level as previous walls.
