Operators of Web sites with racy content must label their sites and register in a national directory or be fined, according to a new U.S. Senate proposal that represents the latest effort among politicians to crack down on Internet sex.

The requirements appear in legislation announced Thursday by two Senate Democrats, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Max Baucus of Montana, that they say will "clean up the Internet for children."

The proposal, which the senators describe as a discussion draft, relies on the idea of embedding a new tag--such as <L18>--in all Web pages that the government deems unsuitable for minors. Then future Web browsers used by minors could be configured to reject L18-labeled Web pages.

"We want to keep our kids safe when they're on the Internet," Baucus said in a statement. "Parents and teachers shouldn't worry about their kids when they're on the computer at home or in the classroom. This bill will help keep kids safe and give parents peace of mind."

Only could effect US websites - will not stop kids from seeing adult content out of the US - essentially allows the US government censorship like powers - very Chinese like. This should never pass.

google.sex FTW. :p

But really, if you can't trust your kids not to go to porn sites, don't let them on the computer...

what they are trying to prevent is kids accidentally viewing pornographic materials. So google image search is no longer corrupted, I think that is a good idea

Heheh. I don't see how that would affect them, but indeed, I would like to see some kind of little "filter" in store. I remember searching for "construction hard hat" or something a while ago, needing, well, an image of a yellow hard hat to use on a button. Guess what was right next to it? A fugging picture of women with hardhats on in ultra mini (if that's even possible) bikinis. Now it didn't *affect* me at all so to say, except that I was really disturbed and now don't use Google Image Search as much. I don't like pulling up crappy 95% unrelated material up with what I actually want. If I can have an option to disable images from .xxx sites to show up in the google image search, I would do so.

There is a difference here

Censorship is not allowing :adult content: to exist
what they are proposing is making it impossible to access unless you want to (or at least really difficult)

Why are kids looking at :adult material:?
They have penises and sex drives thats why

Why is it acceptable?
Because law makers used to be that age

But why is it socially acceptable?
Because women are not longer treated with a universal respect

Why is that?
Because they dress and act as if they don't want/deserve that respect

Why is that?
Because the 'cool' guys like that

[joke (sorta)]Why is that?
Because of rap music[/joke]

It does not say porn in that news. It says Adult, and never defines what Adult is except for this. "in all Web pages that the government deems unsuitable for minors".

> pages that the government deems unsuitable for minors

That could mean the end of thehelper.net as we know it.

It is, after all, a well known fact that adults (18+) visit sites with young members (under 18) for, well, finding, meeting or worse those younger members.
(Want a candy, dear?)
What else would I be doing here?

Some time ago, they tried to create xxx as new top level domain.
Didn't work out either.

On the other hand, this surely must mean that the world's problems are finally solved.
Because, obviously, those gov. reps are just sitting around, bored senseless, and have really nothing else to talk about.

Cool.
