Written at 3 in the morning, this may need refining... But it is the first poem I've written in some time. Enjoy.
Step Away
You can tell me that life is like falling
And that only real men get back up
I could say my whole life I've been stalling
And pushing all my open doors shut
They say "nothing ventured, nothing gained"
And old cliches sound grand on young ears
But I'll just reply "without risk, there is no pain"
And tell you that's how I've lived all my years
Call me a coward and see if it burns
I can tell you that your not the first
But I know what courage earns
And that of all feelings, failure is the worst
What's the cost of living life by just passing by?
Who needs to build people's beliefs higher?
Without wings, there's no point trying to raid the sky
And we all know those who build wax wings fall in the fire
I've lived my entire life just trying to survive
I never bothered to look up at what cannot be mine
Only now do I know that I was never truly alive
That I've missed out on the beautiful sunshine
If I never touch the stars, at least I'll have tried
Maybe that alone will make my son proud
Because a life not lived is the same as if you'd died
There's no shame of reaching for the stars and coming away with a cloud
A man once said "you may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one"
And maybe you can only hear the voice of a screamer
Someone willing to raise their voice to the moon and sun
So the time to reach for your stars is nigh
And though you may only tpuch the clouds
I pray you, please don't cry
At leafy you'll know you had the courage to step away from the crowds
