I hate to say it, but, I read the first book, I was disappointed.
-Blue dragons that turn to elves? wtf?
-The plot is generic
-Other than for the intro and the use of names like "Sunwell", "Kel'Thuzad", "Arthas", etc. What does this have to deal with Warcraft?

dragons are magical. they can turn into anything, IIRC.

They have humanoid forms, i.e. Alexstraza's elfish form.

It was presented strangely in the book.

I mean, who just walks up to someone and says "Yo, I'm a shapshifting dragon, please don't kill me"

Dragons have the ability to turn into any kind of humanoid type being. They can be a orc, furbolg, gnome, elf, human, dwarf, tauren, any.

Besides lot of the blue dragons take Elf and gnome form. Same with red dragons.

(Though Krasus is more of a VERY old night elf look)
