Blizzard has just announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty won't be released this year. From their announcement: "Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service. ... As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we'll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series' legacy in the first half of 2010."

Unlike most people, who have coffee breaks, toilet breaks, lunch breaks, etc; Blizzard has 'work breaks'.
These last about 5-10 minutes.

There are lots of great unfinished games. Take Final Fantasy 7 as an example ;>

But you're right, it's probably worth waiting for

I really don't know how they're going to handle the horde of angry fans. They kept saying "it'll be released this year..." so many times, always extending the dates...

It really disturbs me how it can months to balance a game, when you have an entire team who are (supposed) to be working on it? Do they have to do it with an ENIAC computer? It really can't take that long to make a game, if other companies like EA and relic can create a game, patch it over nine times, and get a good game in less time than it's taken Blizzard to say they'll delay theirs again.

Also, who in their right mind tells someone they're going to release something sensational and then keeps them waiting for 5 years? If I'd learned today that Starcraft 2 was being made, instead of two years ago, then it'd be easier to handle a delay. But about half the world has been hanging on their every word for 5 YEARS.

I am a passionate fan of Starcraft, let it be known!!!

we've seen previews of the sc2 gameplay, its epic, and its a lot more stragetic then their last RTSs. they gave us something before making us wait longer, unlike WoW, they dished those expansions out like crazy.
TBH, im kind-of happy. wc3 will last a little bit longer :)

When you put it like that... when sc2 comes out, does that mean the end for Warcraft maps? Will we be making Starcraft maps, and importing Warcraft models?

I shudder at the thought. To imagine everything we've learnt so far... useless...
In that case, starcraft 2 can take as long as it wants!

I highly doubt that.
The trigger editor, GUI, object editor, etc will still all most likely exist, just with improvements.

id also like to point out that blizzard is working on diablo 3 too. and i doubt anybody gets paid overtime. it may be a different team, but it takes effort from blizzard all around to make everyone happy, we wait in traffic dont we?

i said wc3 will last longer because a lot of people are switching to sc2, and we can say goodbye to good map-makers because they will switch to sc2 most likely

Ive also heard of mapmakers making sc2 versions of their map.

It makes a lot of sense; making your maps with the SC2 editor, better visuals, better pathfinding, some cool new mechanics... and the fact that the engines are very similar. I think it will be just as easy to create a warcraft 3 map on starcraft 2! And you get to make units out of larva without without triggering it <drool smily>

Greatness takes time dude;)

Ea and Relic does not announce their games as early in the process as Blizzard does, that gives the fans a longer time to grow custom to the looks and the feel of the game in another way. With Blizzard we kind of get to grow into the games before release, and EA and Relic are much larger companies.

Another thing you got to bare in mind is that most of the diablo, if not all of them, left and with Blizzard already being a somewhat small company compared to the two giants you compared it with, I for one don't blaim them if it takes more time to develop a game;)

I thought exactly as you did when I started to learning c++. "It can't take that long", I have been working on my first game for kind of half a year now and have not yet been close to even seeing any results at all of what the game will look like:rolleyes:

There is a lot more behind making a game than most you people think, every little thing has to be coded in to fit exactly the way the boss want.
I would guess that the zergling model alone has been redone atleast 5 times before they had anything close to today;) And yes, I was counting texturing aswell:rolleyes:
