Java , c++ or anything else ?

Hey people , I am going to start learning programming . Which language would you suggest ?

I'd say C++, but only because I love C++.

Overall though, I'd say C++ pretty much because you can use it to do pretty much anything. Network Programs, Games/Game Servers, anything. Also, the Object based programming makes things much easier to organize.

Anyway, ontopic, C++ is best imo but hard, I think VB.net is the easiest(Really easy), a bit more advanced but still very easy - C#.

and will knowledge of VB help me in learning C# and C++ ? Also what about java ?

Learning any programming langauge gives you the power to learn others much much faster, but seeing as they're all very much different, you're pretty much learning a whole new thing ( Structure wise, functions, ect ). Like I said, if you already know one, grasping the concept is much easier on the next.

Sintoras, you really think C# is easy? I absolutely hate it, and I'm semi-pro C++. xDD

Well, when I was learning, I had a really hard time grasping the "Object Oriented Programming" idea, so I went for Pascal ( I wouldn't recommend this anymore, as I was 12 when I did this, and Pascal is pretty much obsolete now ). When I dabbled in that, I went to PHP ( Even though it's a browser coding language, for the most part, it still helped me a bit. ) Then moved onto C++, it took me a long long time to learn, but when you finally do, you can do anything.

As for the easiest, I'd say VB.net. Visual Basic is, well, basic. It still works, but there are many things that you can't do, or that are hard to do, with VB.

Blasphemy! Delphi (and Lazarus) communities are still very active.

The fact you're a beginner does not mean you should start with the easiest language - if you do that and at some point want to try a lower level language, you'll find it very difficult to adapt.
Do not start with anything .NET, you'll just spoil yourself. I also don't recommend starting with anything from the Basic family (VB included), but those languages (VB in particular) have good resources to be found on the interweb (i.e. forums, libraries etc.).

I suggest starting with C - it may be difficult at first, but it's very powerful and will teach you the basics of programming. Then proceed to C++ and introduce yourself to the OOP concepts. After that you should be able to handle just about anything, including, but not limited to Java, C#, PHP...

C is not a program, C is a programming language. You should be looking for a C Compiler.

As for the tutorial...tried to google? "C tutorial", "C programming tutorial" (without the quotes) comes with many results. Notably this one seems nice.

I learned Visual Basic when I was 9 years old and stuck with it. (Brothers that major in computer science FTW)

Well, most OS Software uses Visual C++ now, so that won't come in handy down the road if you decide to join a team or something of the such.

I tend to use Visual C++. I also have Visual Basic and Visual C#.

I started HTML when I was 10, and since then I have moved on through different languages. HTML, CSS, PHP, C++ etc...

Not really - if you have an interest and are willing to learn, you could learn it at pretty much any age, right?

Infact the older you are the quicker you'll pick up on it 'cause all programming languages involve math. Learn a programming language when your younger and you'll be better at math when your older.

I don't think that age is a major factor. I believe that how much time you put in to it is important though.

The point of this thread is learning.
Once you know what's there to know, the tool you use doesn't matter that much.
Also, not everybody uses VC++, essentially because it's proprietary.

I go for Javascript, it is useful for making applets lol.....
Though I never tried C++
