How do you guys do it, i balanced 2 units in about an hour, and its for a TD, so i think this might take a while, they cost the same so i tried to make them completely balanced, and their performance is off by 5 damage. So i can balance almost perfectly, but it takes really long, is there a way to balance rather than changing 1 value, test, check, quit, change 1 value, test, check, quit, etc.?

calculate it? would be a long formula with these arguments:

-hp of unit
-damage / s delt by tower to unit
-span of time unit is attacked
-> duration to get 1 unit down

-money the player has got to this moment and amount of towers he built with this
->duration to kill all the creeps

speed of creeps
->amount of time the creeps need to get to the target point

maybe i forgot about a few points, but i think you will be able to detect it if so.
hint: excel could be useful for this!

Making all of the units first, estimating what their stats should be.

Then do a test run, make notes about which levels are too hard, which are just right, which are too easy, etc.

Do about 5 test runs, then host, and see what peoples reactions are to different levels.

It's also nice to have formulas that can quickly calculate different numbers, like average damage, damage per second, effective hp, etc. Here's a tutorial with some of those formulas:
