COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- The Maldives government will discuss awarding a national honor to a 15-year-old boy scout who foiled an assassination attempt on the leader of their tiny nation by grabbing an attacker's knife, an official said Wednesday.
Mohammed Jaisham Ibrahim instantly became a household name after a man jumped out of a crowd of well-wishers and lunged at President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on Tuesday. The teenager suffered wounds to his hand in the scuffle.
"The Cabinet will discuss it and it's a lengthy process," government spokesman Mohammed Shareef said by telephone from the capital, Male.
Residents of the Maldives have showered praise on the 15-year-old. "Jaisham our national hero saves the president," the Midhu Daily newspaper cheered in a headline.
