How do you create a reputation, ranking system for forums?
... just curious...

Depends on what forum system you are using....

Simple machines comes with it, you just have to enable it.
PHPBB has to have a mod.

The rest, I don't know.

Um, Vbulletin has reputation, but InvisionFree doesn't.However, InvisionFree and many other forum types have the "warn system" (something like reputation)

The warn system in invisionfree forums is not so much a "reputation" style award system, but moreso an administrative function. It works to the effect of, "If moderators see you being really bad, they'll increase your warn level. If your warn level reaches x amount [set by forum admin] then you're instantly banned."

Although I often find a gentle nudge in the right direction more effective and productive. :)

Uh, well... i do not have any thing up and running, just curious.
I'd like to have the reputation, ranking and things like that based on the number of posts, subjects, etc. as well... been wishing, but my knowledge and time doesn't allow me to learn the coding so well... if at all... :(

So anyone help further? :D

What I reckon

From what vBulletin forums I've used, I've never had any trouble. I've never personally installed one so I couldn't tell you how easy/difficult it was.

InvisionFree forums are good, basic, free forums. You don't have to worry about hosting, but if you want a customizeable forum, it's not for you, because you can't add any features. You also can't transfer your forum over, because they own the databases. Unless maybe you ask nicely. :p Invision sell professional forums which you can install. They have a nice clean interface, but again I've had no experience with setting them up.

phpBB is a popular one. It's fairly easy to set up, and there are lots of modifications out there (with easy-to-follow instructions attached). I think for your purposes this should be high on your list. There are also a lot of skins to choose from if you don't like the default appearance.

As far as simplemachines goes, I've installed it once, but had no other experience with it. It was easy to install, but I'm not sure on the modifiability.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully that gives you some idea of what you might want. =)

Slightly OT...

Hmmm, let's pick one of a few -- phpBB for now.
Does it allow ranking by number of posts per article/subject,
reputation, warning and last-posted activity rating? :p

I don't know... is this too much?
What else can you tell me? :)

As this post states on the PHPBB official forum,

espicom said:
I used "rate" as the search term, and found:

Rate users (Dev)
Rate users v1.0.1 (beta)
Rate users (abandoned)

There's also phpbbhacks.com, and I think they have a couple over there.

Your best bet out of that list is the first one, Rate users (Dev). However, I checked phpBBHacks and I found this reputation mod.

I would try the phpBBHacks mod first, and failing that, the phpBB official forum's mod.

Cheers

@Vector: Simple Machines has a built in mod installing system, you can view a list online, and click "Install now!" and it will install it without you haven't to manually edit files. :)

Uhh, does it allow system like the first-half of the rank by reputation and the second-half by posts/living in community?

You know, like Webrunner User ('Webrunner' from activity and 'User' by reputation, this is just example)? I hope, there's even more complicated programs to rate, or is there? :D

Heh, is that why i always end up with 'mysterious' names on web?
Making people confused... lol :D

Well, i meam a system that creates a rank from 2 portions/pieces
and each piece is rated by different thing, i.e. posts and reputation.
I think... or i hope, i spoke it easier to understand now.

Well MysterySoul, a good way to find out would be to install your phpBB forum and install the mod to see if it does what you want. ;)

Well, that is not possible yet... becouse, i have no connection on my computer and on the other hand -- am not allowed to install anything on my vocational training centre's computer, nor my family computer (shared by family). So i cannot install it... :(

But does it require programming? I barely have any knowledge, skill or experience in phpBB. :banghead:

Well this may just be your opportunity to gain a bit of all of the above.

From their website,
"XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl. XAMPP is really very easy to install and to use - just download, extract and start."

What this means for you
You can install XAMPP and run a website from your home computer. Your website will not nessecarily be set up to run on the internet. As a matter of fact, you need to do a few things to achieve that.

HOWEVER, you can access the website on your own computer, so effectively you can set up and run a website without it ever being on the internet. You can see, with your web browser, what it will be like if you were to put it on the internet.

I haven't personally used XAMPP but I've heard good things about it, and they claim that it installs to one directory and is easy to use.

What you should do
Use the time that you "can't do anything." Get some experience with phpBB! Set up your own personal web server on your computer, just for testing. Install the phpBB database on that website, and try installing the mods. If you need help with those things, the internet is saturated with manuals, instructions, tutorials and the like on almost any topic. Failing that, you've always got the option to post your question here.

If that's not an option...
You could always try getting some free webhosting and install the phpBB forums and the mod on that.
