Simplify, (2^3)5

^= an exponent after it.

Also Simplify, then evaluate the expression when x=2 and y=1
(x^4y^2)(y^5)

Serious? Some calculators have variables, any sientific one has exponents... And all humans can do those.

Simplify, (2^3)5

2^3 = 8

8*5 = 40...

(x^4y^2)(y^5)

(2^4*1^2)(1^5)

(16*1)(1)

Since he said to simplify on the second one before evaluating:

(x^4*y^2)(y^5)
x^4*y^7
2^4*1*7
16*1

What does the "^" mean? I've never seen that sign in maths before:(
Is it the same as writing this:
2 with a small 3 up to the right?

Yes :p. It's called 'Power'.

2^3 is called '2 to the power of 3'.

> I've never seen

You will... in future.

I hope this doesn't turn out to become something like 'help do my homework for me' kind of thread.
