Retraining your hero, at what cost?

Working on a system to allow retraining for the player heroes in my ORPG.

Now the issue is I want to set a cost. What should it cost the player?

A quest item.
A certain amount of exp, maybe even a level or two.
A large amount of gold.
A chunk of another very special resource that will be hard to get.

I could make a quest for it, but if they player managed to gimp their char really badly, then that wont work well (God only knows how they would gimp their char, but I am sure someone will pull it off).

I could charge Exp, such as a whole level or two to be able to respec your abilities. But this may be a turn off for level 50 players.

Gold has been done... nothing special with that. But its reliable.

The special resource is what I am considering. It will be hard to obtain, but not brutally difficult like the quest should be.

make it a lvl 5 ability choice or something.

at lvl 5 you could become "master of your own destiny" and it would be an ability that used up like all your mana, but it allowed you to repick all your skills (except your repick ability)

id say a quest, an off beat side quest maybe...

example:

unit enters town give abiltiy or (types message containsing blah balh blah) move unit to a sectioned off aprt of map and have them run a trial, go threw dungeon & kill boss, or W/E and if u beat it you get to retrain, and if not, your sent back to town

i tihnk it'd be a sweet spin off then ''tome of retraining''

personally i don't like or use tome of retraining...simply don't need it. and if the people that play your game would use their head they wouldn't need it either.

maybe put it at a region
lets say a Monk's Temple

The person has to journey farfarfarfarfar X99999999 away to reach this area
when he reaches this place then he can reset all his abilities
but to get here maybe put sumthin like monsters, puzzles and maybe n item quest
