What kind of terrain should I use for a strategy kind of map?
It has to be some what realistic.

  • Sunken Ruins: Was thinking lots of islands, large and small ones.
  • Ashenvale: Mostly land, lakes, and some islands.
  • Village: Same as above.
  • Snow: A big main land and a few islands.
  • Felwood: Well it has to be realistic so I'm not sure about this one. Same as Ashenvale.

It would be cool if you made a stratigy game with sunken ruins. Lots of islands and resources meaning you would have to island hop a lot. sea battles FTW.
I dont advise felwood or anything like cityscape or villlage, doesnt seem stratigy like.
Oh and, what kind of stratigy game is this? like Age of empires or something?

What kind of strategy map? Is it like Castle Builder, or Europa/BFME (haven't played WC3 lately but I think Europa and BFME have a similar play-style) or something else? Is it in a Warcraft-style (i.e. orcs, elves, undead, that kinda stuff), a modern/futuristic style, etc.? 'Realistic' will vary alot depending on the general theme.

Personally, I'd like to see Felwood used (I'm saying this not in regard to realism) since it's a cool tileset IMO

I like how you think, sea battles are funny. But the most cool thing in this map will be when you seige a city.

You build up your city with walls, gates and train units to attack your enemies and defend your and your friends cities.

Edit> It's a medieval strategy map, Felwood looks good but I'm not sure if I would use it.

If that's the case, I think village could fit nicely (at least as part of the map) - perhaps a number of villages scattered around the map, or a few larger ones (would probably be better for a few large ones, since you would be more able to utilise the tileset)

I think, you should try and incorporate some kind of unique aspect. To many games are like the classic, easy defend. Easy siege. You should try make the STRATEGY, vital. In games like this too many people would just bunker down and defend an inpenaterable base. ALSO, i think a good idea for a map on sunken isles would be to have islands with unique resources and also have islands with (whatever race you choose)[lets use goblins for an example] Goblin observatories that you can take over to view the surrounding terrain. (steal blood elves campain idea) And another cool thing would be if you could take over stationary guns n such. AND have trading routes n junk. Ok i bored you enough, happy hunting!

EDIT: Why not use a mix of terrains, make a custom tileset.

I think I should use a tileset that can have a sea and also look good with some big continents. Village looks good with both(my opinion).

My map uses 4 custom resources, stone, gold, wood and arcane dust. All of them ar collected in different ways. You can also build walkable walls, high ones, so attcking a city won't be easy at all.

I'd make the base tileset Ashenvale, because of it's awesome natural terrain, Then edit it with custom tiles (Up to 16) from Village :)

Then you can use ashenvale everywhere that should look natural, and village everywhere else. (You could even throw in some dalaran tiles..)
