In a breakthrough that holds the promise of new treatments for cancer, heart disease and a host of other deadly illnesses, Canadian scientists have managed to isolate the stem cells for human blood.

The research, published Thursday in the leading academic journal Science, opens the door to more clinical applications for stem-cell therapies, as well as further research.

Scientists hope the discovery will help develop better and more effective treatments for leukemia, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and spinal cord injury.

"Stem cells are so rare that this is a little like finding a needle in a haystack," said principal investigator John Dick, a senior scientist at the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine and the Ontario Cancer Institute.

"These new findings are a major step to generate sufficient quantities of stem cells to enable greater clinical use and thus move closer to realizing the promise of regenerative medicine for patients," Dick said.
