Upgrade 'Increment'

Hello, I've been making a few upgrades. However, i've noticed that for many of the upgrades, there is a 'base' bonus and an 'increment' bonus. I'm wondering what the 'increment' bonus is.

I have two theories right now:
1. If base = 100 and increment = 100, level one will give a bonus of 100, level two 200, level three 300, and so on.
2. If base = 100 and increment = 100, level one will give a bonus of 100, and every level following will give a bonus of 100.

Ok just to be clear, lets pretend we have a unit that does 10 damage.
Base is 1 and inc is 1
After the first research, he will do 11 damage, second research he will do 12, third research he will do 13. Is this correct?

If the bonus increment is simply the bonus added every level except the first...
Then what's the gold/lumber increment?

you mean for the upgrade costs?
it works the same

it starts from the base cost and then it increases by 'increment' values

It increases the upgrade's cost
Like say you have an upgrade with 5 gold increments and 10 base
Lvl 1 costs 10, lvl 2 costs 15, lvl 3 costs 20, and so on
