What pet would you want

Shade. It's strength is that it takes less damage from physical attacks and has powerful spells, but is weak to spells and is unable to do practical physical damage.

The idea itself is okay, but what would its actual use be?

you could make a pet that advances based on the actions of the hero. I dunno how your map works, but it would be cool for a pet to reflect the hero. After using so many cold spells for example, your pet would eventually grow into something cold. Physical spells makes it something that has high health and high damage but no spells. Or something to that degree.

I have something along the lines of this already. Currently each pet starts of super weak, but as leveling occurs they go stronger and stronger. Eventually they match the strength of the owner.

dog - fast movespeed moderate attack has the bark skill which temporarily lowers defense
killer bunny - slowish-moderate movespeed and moderate-high damage with a jump spell where he causes damage where he lands
Horse - really high movespeed, medium - low damage, moderate health, and has mount ability where u can ride him for faster movespeed (but cant attack on him/her cuz ur not a knight )

Dog - The dog seems like a good solo user pet. I'll definitely consider it.
Killer Bunny - This one seems a bit... Uh... Weird?
Horse - Yet another solo user pet. I could even add an ability to add bash to the horse.

The idea itself is okay, but what would its actual use be?

I'm guessing that a Sorcerer or Warlock style character would be using a Shade for a [combat] pet.

Corpse Eater Pet - Proly a ghoul, bug, or nerubian

Pet actively seeks out and 'eats' (removes) corpses, every corpse removed in this way give +X life and Y damage. Effect stacks until no corpses are eaten for 30 seconds.

If your RPG were a team game it'd be best to have one of these, and it'd be most proficient at killing large groups of frail units, while probably below average vs. bosses.

you can make the pet ordinary summons:
-fire elemental (start low lvl -evolve magna or something)
-water / wind / earth / lightining / darkness + you have the weaknesses

the usual works too - dog - dire dog . wolf - timber wolf
if you know how to make it you can make the evolved dog/wolf mountable therefore (bonus dmg + speed)

Mole (Bury as one ability (when buried regen 50% more))
baby phoneix or panda (cute)
a small yeti or harpy could be interesting
dont forget about a tiger (worth downloading some good models )
and of course a ferry dragon

I think the pet type should be locked to the hero type, simply for balance... Like if all support heroes were to get a tank animal and all tanks got support animals then overall they'd all the the same. Heroes should have specialisation in order for the game to be interesting, and for better teamwork in the game.

Also some heroes could be stronger on their own, some could rely a lot more on their pet, and some could be even with their pet.

The people who rely on their pet more could also directly link to it; say a spellcaster whose pet summons the elements from another region so he can cast his spells.

Heroes like a ranger, who on their own tend to always be rigged (agi = speed, damage, all you really need in mass to wipe out anything. Health is for losers ), could simply have a pet that acts as a scout if anything.

Kitie cat: soo sweet and lovable that enemy units can't attack it. Ofcourse with a simple morfing spell, the adorable cat turns into a blood thirsty.. snake

Sheeps make good pets. specially if the sheep can devour it's opponents.

Don't you just love goblins? Nothing like the smell of fresh napalm in the morning.

Your pet system is just like the Diablo III Druid's Grizzly or can you 'mount' them?

If they are mounts, you could do the following:

Grunt(hero) mounts Kodo(high hp, high armour, low damage, low ms) becoming kodo rider(model change)
Archer(hero) mounts hippogriff(Med hp, med damage, low armour, high ms) becoming hippogriff rider
Troll(hero) mounts bat(med hp, high damage, high ms) becoming troll batrider
bandit(hero) mounts horse(low hp, low damage, high ms) becoming Bandit lord


Or if the pets are only used for fighting and are not mounts then:

You can make summonable pets like Bear which will be sumonable only by the druid.

You can make drops-from-boss-death pets, like you will get a hippogriff/dragonhawk pet when you defeat the hippogriff master/dragonhawk tamer.

Or, pets that can be bought, like you can buy a gryphon from the gryphon aviary.

Just few of my ideas, if you fall out of ideas for pets then you can refer to the pets of WoW, there are many pets there, if you want i can give you a list.
