main reasons i can think of that people hate wow are:
  • not their prefered game style MMORPG
  • people getting killed by other players with better gear or a higher level as it feels unfair
  • the constant feeling that there are better players then themselves because the have better gear
  • exclusion from raiding ect
  • feeling the Wow community is made up of a young 10-13 age group but still not being better then them
  • repetiveness of quests

I think most MMORPGS are like that.

The reason I don't like WoW is because it's so expensive. It's a continuous stream of money out of my pockets :( I'd probably like it better if it was just a one payment type of deal. Like Warcraft III was.

Agreed, but what do you mean with "Like Warcraft III was"
isnt it one-time-pay anymore? :S

I don't see a reason to hate WoW, I doubt it has harmed you in any physical way, disliking it is not an issue, I do it myself, but saying you hate the game seems quite strange. If you allow hell's rages upon a PC-game, then you truly need to visit the real world and let the players of WoW do whatever they may wish themselves. It just seems foolish to get angered by a sequence of binary numbers.

Well, I don't think that this question is supposed to be, why people hate WoW, most answers speak generally. Which describes most MMORPGs so I guess it ends up like, why people hate MMORPGs.

My answer: When you get addicted and hooked to it, you feel the urge to be more powerful in the game and well, this urge is intensified if you have some real life competitions like your friends. Though some people gets carried over too much that they take the game so seriously that as if the other characters that they don't know is a competition for them or whatever, chirva chirva etc. etc.

I'm trying to understand where everyone is getting the idea that the game mostly consists of prepubescent kids. Every guild I've joined has been primarely twenty to forty year olds. Of course there are younger people in the guilds such as myself but 80%+ aren't. The really young kids are easily spotted due to annoying behaviors and lack of knowledge concerning the game. If you can't notice them because of that then you shouldn't be complaining about them anyways. Age isn't as big of factor as maturity. Also, if you are too prideful to accept being beaten by someone younger than you, than you might need to grow up some yourself.

But then again, you wouldn't be getting major content patches every 2-3 months and instead, you would be getting "paid" expansions such as guildwars.

I like Guild Wars. Guild Wars is fun. It's F2P online. That's all that matters to me. And as long as the games don't cost more than $50 each, I'm fine.

Addiction to games are as real as any other addiction. Being truly addicted to games is not fun. People have killed themselves over it.

Playing WoW doesn't make me hate you, but your stupid comment above did.

Except it's NOT addiction. Some people become obsessed with it to the point that they may as well be addicted, but it's nothing like drugs. For a very small minority the difference might not be very clear, but it's still not the same thing. And the people who "killed themselves because of WoW"? Not a chance. Sure, something in WoW might have been the last straw, but unless you're legally insane, there's no way something in a videogame is going to have that much of an impact. I'm willing to bet that more people killed themselves over Friends being canceled than have killed themselves over WoW. Doesn't stop the handful of cases from being very sad, but blaming WoW for their troubles is just silly.

Addiction isn't only a medical term you know:
Wikipedia said:
The term "addiction" is used in many contexts to describe an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence, such as: drug addiction, video game addiction, crime, money, alcoholism, work addiction, compulsive overeating, problem gambling, computer addiction, pornography addiction, plastic surgery addiction, etc.

That's easy for you to say, you're not addicted :p
However, I do agree with you, I doubt someone commited suicide over dying at WoW, but I'd rather say that the addiction became that person's bane. The thought that something had that much control over the person's life and thoughts that he/she just couldn't take it anymore. When the reality inside the screen becomes more real than the outside, one should notice the warning signals. It has happened, don't be ignorant.

How is that silly, and when did I say that WoW is the only videogame out there? Sure, there probably aren't many incidents where WoW has been the culprit, but other online video games could easily be. It's not about blaming WoW, it's about realizing the fact that people can kill themselves over such things.

@t.s.e.

Well, first off, if you're going to go about and say that someone HAS become so addicted/obsessed/involved in WoW or any other game that they killed themselves over it, or over something that happened in that game, you're going to need to give a source. As is, I think it far more likely that people, who's life wasn't going all that well before, during, and/or after playing WoW, get depressed, as people do, and then something pushes them over the edge and they do something drastic. That last thing could be anything, from being stood up at a date to having your WoW account stolen to having a pet run away. :(

And that definition doesn't really prove anything. Yes, you could call it an "addiction", but my point is that being addicted to a video game is nothing like being addicted to various drugs.

It's an addiction any way you look at it. It just doesn't have all of the physical effects that Cocaine or Marajuana has.

Alright.
Source one
Source two
Source three
While not all these are suicides, I daresay that murder is serious enough to qualify for being branded an addict.

Hmm, while the media does tend to blow these things out of proportion, those are pretty damning. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if every single one of those cases was accompanied by some combination of drugs, mental illness, or other personal issues. At any rate, by your definition of "addiction", WoW could fall into it, but then so would any other video game, anime, TV, soda, candy, etc etc.

However, a more traditional definition of addiction means you have to actually get physically sick when you stop doing it for it to count. With videogames, not playing will do nothing more than make you want to play. In this sense, WoW most definitely is not "addictive".

By the definition of "Addiction", WoW, and all video games, can indeed be "addictive".

I love games like WoW and Warhammer online: Age of Reckoning but the fact that you have to pay monthly completely ruins it. Like say i buy a 2 months subscription and for about 2 weeks i had exams and was unable to play, what am i to do? i just wasted 2 weeks. so pretty much I hate p2p games, even if they're great.
