Blizzard has always done that. They're geniuses, and that's why Warcraft III is still big. Once you get sick of the RTS of it, (like me) you move onto other maps and making maps. Diablo II has a disguised version of that, called Open Battle.net. People make mods for it, and make their own items. It's no surprise WoW has the same feature.
