How do you tell if a forum user is a female or a male?

Just a painstaking question on telling the differences between man and woman.

It's really hard to tell, and I know it. Experienced forum users, and maybe administrators might not emphasize the gender, but it would be an honor to do that.

Do you have some ideas, or suggestions about this? Post them up here!

Another question: What word should I use if I were to refer a person without saying whether that person is a male or female, or giving out the wrong point?

I don't think it really matters, but could help to know (how? I don't know ).
A '(s)he' usually works. They shouldn't get offended, because unless they specified it somewhere you wouldn't know.

But, it's funny when some get dissapointed when they find out it's a guy Usually the "I thought you where a chick!" comments roll in =D

Nothing personal, but I'm trying to find out if there's a way to tell if that user is a male or female, and it's not about being statistical. I'm pretty sure that poll couldn't be more strong enough to be as an evidence. (Whatever, I couldn't find that word again...:banghead

I heard, from 4chan, that to tell a user's gender, one must try to read what that person said, then use logical reasonings to see how genders talk.

Boys: Leets, Slangs, etc.
Girls: Formal grammars, misuse typos, laughing off the floor humor, etc.

No idea what that meant...

i dont know many people named tom either, but if I did know one, that tome was probably a guy.

Like if I thought that Ghan wasn't a man but wasn't sure I would say... erm... just Ghan.



Or if I thought GaLs was a he-she, I would say "GaLs... pass the butter."

I don't, at least.
Not many people judge whether someone's a boy or a girl from his/her writing.

Although, I always refer to someone as he unless I know that he's a she
Besides, most forums I am on are about games (DotA) how many girls are in there?

It's not our fault for mistaking a girl for a boy because she didn't say she's a girl, especially on the net.

Haha, so based on 4chan guys are 1337 and girls are Grammar Nazis (With the exception of Ghan ;D)

Okay, that explains the lecture of Man...

Are there any other secret ways of telling one if that person is a he or not? It's not like asking that person out in public, or PM to that person (It might be offending, who knows?). Sort of a study, or research, or something that has a little hint in giving away the gender. It needs to be foolproof, you know what I'm saying?

As for Nigerian's reply, how do you suppose to webcam him/her, if that person gave you the wrong email address, wrong picture, no webcam, it's too hard to tell the gender or something that may or would fool you?

Eh, I don't think it really matters.

If you are unsure, and want to find out, you can do something like this:

"I think that (s)he? wants to take over the world!"

usually they would reply with "I'm a boy/dude/guy/man" or "I'm a girl/lady/chick/woman"
