Balance must be maintained for both players types, and everyone in between, which can be tricky. Ultimately, it’s going to take the game's harder difficulty modes -- Hell and Inferno -- to challenge the limits of the best Diablo III players.

From http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/events/diablo3-announcement/index.html#beta:d3-interview
aka a blizzard website, with an interview from a blizzard guy.

There are posts on the blizz forums about this too but no blue response yet, im assuming because its late and bashiok is done his work already. i'll update if there is a blue post sometime soon.

what do you think? Normal < Nightmare < Hell < Inferno sounds epic. hell was god damn hard in d2 so i wonder how this will be...

Another thing, does anybody know how difficulty modes work in this? is it like d2 where when you beat normal nightmare unlocks, or something different? cuz in d1 it went by difficulty (20 nightmare and 40 hell if i remember correctly, but i might be wrong)

I don't like the idea of 4 difficulties. 3 difficulties is a magic number, and anything beyond "Hell" just becomes repetitive. If they actually need a 4th difficulty, it suggests poor game design, and a lack of end-game content, something which I am very concerned about.

Okay I retract that statement. I very much like the idea of 4 difficulties, "Inferno" being designed for end-game content.

It's just a rumor, but Diablo Twitter is egging us on:

"I have no idea what you're talking about..." -Diablo

Speculate away!

Im just hoping its not just like hell in d2 where they just threw on some immunities, and increased health and damage. i want them to have like spells or something...

Its official

Inferno Revealed

Inferno will be a fourth and even harder difficulty that unlocks after beating the game through the Hell difficulty and getting your character to level 60. Designed as an end game objective for players, monsters faced in this difficulty will all be at least level 61. Designed with more HP, damage, resistances, and more aggressive AI, the monsters pose to face players with the most difficult challenge of the game. Along with this, some monsters and bosses will even have extra skills at their disposal that you will only see in Inferno.

The objective of the Inferno difficulty is to give players something to do once capped but would avoid running the same bosses over and over again like the Baal runs of Diablo II. The entire game will plateau in this difficulty meaning that there will be no one particular place that would be best to farm for items. Blizzard is hoping that this will give the players an incentive to repeat the entire content of the game while looking for the best items and not just one section repeatedly. Even if players find a particular area that maximizes results for their efforts, Blizzard said they will add incentives to run through the entire content.

Now for the incentive to put yourself through this challenge of Inferno. Blizzard has said that only the best of the best gear will drop in Inferno. Both statistically and visually, if players want to find the best gear for their characters, they will have to make their way through Inferno multiple times. Along with armor and weapons, other high-end items like top ranked runestones will only drop in Inferno.

With end game finally revealed, and Beta beginning in a "little while" what else could gamescom hold in store for Diablo III. Stay tuned on Saturday when Diablo's two performances and interview are being held for some more possible news.

Everything i wanted has been given to me. No more mf runs, but rather game runs, and like i asked monsters will have new spells and skills!!! i am just as excited about this game as i was before the RMAH announcement DIABLO 3 W00000000000000000000000000T i am now back to being super duper ultra mega excited for this, as apposed to just super duper ultra excited as i was after the RMAH announcement.

Also i forgot to mention (if you havnt seen the video or inferred through the article) you must be level 60 and beaten hell to play in inferno. The player cap is 60. You must max your character to play in inferno. Also, the minimum monster level in inferno is 61. Every single monster you will face WILL be a higher level than you. In hell diablo 2 the minimum monster level was 85 with a character max of 99. In a diablo 2 perspective, inferno would have a minimum monster level of 103 while your max is 99. If memory serves me right, hell Baal in diablo 2 had a level of 99 and uber baal had a level of 125. Just to put things into perspective.

Also keep in mind that in Diablo 2, levels were much less powerful than they will be in Diablo 3. Level 98 to 99 in Diablo 2 was like....15 hitpoints and a slight increase in spell damage. I imagine the difference between level 60 and 61 is significantly more.

I'm excited about this.

Well by 60, with the removal of skill points and stats points i dont think a level is going to be that significant. i think it will be the lower levels up to 30 where you pick your skills and passives which are going to be making the big difference, and after that its going to be more like what you just mentioned, with slight skill increases and a few hitpoints.
