They actually are going into the studio this month. They said it's not a 100% new Metallica project though... my guess is either another covers album/EP, or re-recordings of classic songs for a compilation album.

I am looking forward to it either way. Also seeing them at Sonisphere this summer

Metallica are very much still metal. Load/Reload might've been a diversion but Death Magnetic sounds very metal to me...
