You want them, because you want to surpass them or be like them (Am I wrong?)
So it will be cool, to have robots that make you competitive, but it would be more cool to have humans to do that for you?
They will also have some experience, you will talk about many things, you will see them be pleasant because they help you, isn't that beautiful?

Can we not get into the human cloning debate?
That, in itself, is a very, very lengthy discussion spanning religion, philosophy, circular logic, evolution, sociology and risk vs. benefit =/

I obviously want to surpass them.
I'm not picky on whether my rival is human or not.
The thing with having machines able to do it is that it gives me an option; an option I can choose and is readily available.

While one might not always have the.. 'connections' to other humans that share in their interests, have the time and patience to teach and the experience, one would almost always be able to have access to a machine/computer.

Like, say, you're interested in "Go" and several other board games, carpentry and airplane modelling.
Finding people to teach you all of these or be your rival would take a while (Especially if these things are considered novel in your area).
Getting your hands on a single machine to teach you all that and anything else you might be interested in is much easier.
And you only lose a little social value during the learning process (Sure, it'll be intelligent but you'll know it ain't human and it'll affect any social interaction with the machine).

I believe it will be possible to make machines intelligent enough (an android, anyone?) in the future (just a matter of 'when') and there'll be good uses for them, too.
So I see no point in NOT researching more into these things.

Of course, I am assuming that it is possible to create machines that mimic or surpass human intelligence.
(We're humans, we'll figure it out sooner or later if we don't kill each other first.)
