Hackers have taken down Sony and PlayStation.com which has consequently taken the PlayStation Network offline.

Speaking on an IRC chat a group of hackers, who are known as Anonymous, have successfully taken down several Sony-owned websites. One of which is PlayStation.com as well as Sony.com (although the site is slowly coming back). The attack is caused via a DDoS attack which is a distributed denial-of-service attack.

Also, the PlayStation Network is experiencing connection issues for PS3 owners.

Seriously? This is a good thing? There are millions of console owners out there who just want to play games in a fair environment and do not want a bunch of fucking morons with hacked consoles ruining it for the majority. And to now take down the entire network, that is not going to drum up support for you, it is not going to turn people against Sony. Those people who would rather just be playing online against whoever care not one iota for the plight of some attention-whore hacker.

In the PS3, Sony gave a great console with FREE online play and even the Other OS feature. Then you got a tiny minority complaining when it was taken out, because that same tiny minority was exploiting it and it indirectly allowed pirated games. So you don't wanna pay for a game because you're a cheap-ass bastard living in your mother's basement? Then you don't deserve to play them. Developers have to make money from their product in order to produce more of said product.
And yes, this argument would still stand with any console. They provide you with a service, you enter into a contract for that service, it is YOU who are breaking that contract by hacking, not the provider.

I used to have some support for Anonymous. In doing this, they have affected those who they claim to be helping more than their supposed target. It is like a terrorist who claims to be liberating the people by detonating a truck bomb outside their office block because it is owned by the government.

I make no apologies if you don't agree with that. [/Late night rant]

People effected are not going to know its Anonymous and are going to look at Sony. That is what they are trying to do. Sure, it is disrupting some gaming and hopefully Sony will do what it takes to get there customers back up and online. Its in Sony's court now.

I agree with Wiseman. Nothing is being accomplished here beyond disrupting the company for a few hours and in turn affecting thousands of other people as a poorly veiled act of vengeance, probably carried out by a small minority of those who are Anonymous.

the problem with being anonymous is that anyone can pose as you.
i doubt this group is at all related to the groups who attacked westboro baptist or bank of america or the ones who supported wikileaks.
i expect soon lot of butthurt angsty kids will abuse this to make threats because they will think they can get away with it.

and seriously? mad because sony wont let you jailbreak ps3s? just get a real computer you asshole.

I don't think you understand what Anonymous is.

why would you think that?
i know what sites the majority of anon comes from.
ive seen threads where anon ruined the lives of cat abusers and other people they deemed worthy of trolling.

i dont think you understood my point.
what i am trying to say is that i am reluctant to group this particular action with the other actions made in the name of anon due to the fact that anyone can make any action in the name of anon.

That's the point, anyone can be anon. It's anonymous. One or two people can't DDoS a big site like sony.com though... perhaps a few thousand zombie computers

I disagree with those who say that hacking the network is hurting anon's cause. The customers will look at Sony and complain to no one other than Sony. Sony can whine and mourn all they want. But they won't get any sympathy from customers who spent their hard earned money for Sony services.

this. - one person is all it takes to send all those zombie computers @ a target

that said, wiseman, your still missing part of the point of anon - it's not just the people who want to run hacked games that lost out.. remember that like the U.S. government purchased a ton of PS3's to use as a super computer? lots of others did as well, because it ran linux and was at a high performance/cost ratio (such that sony lost money and made it back on the games), and there is no way you can group the two together like that (assume that all the people who run linux on the ps3 did it to hack the game, or vice versa)

This is so sad. I don't understand what anyone would gain from this. I would be really ticked off if I suddenly found myself not being able to play any of my online games that I paid for.

Only reason I don't have a PS3 though is cause I can't afford it. But still, these Anonymous guys should just chill, they are doing irreversable
harm.

Go attack some other site that doesn't screw up 10 million people who have nothing to do with this around the world. And that includes me.

Sony must be quite pissed off now. I hope the PSN comes back online when Mortal Kombat comes out.

Jailbreaking is in all ways legal.
Go, Anon, go!
Also, this was one of their better videos.
